Death by pharmaceutical drugs
In the USA recreational drugs, such as cocaine and heroin, claim about 10,000-20,000 deaths a year. While this is a big problem, pharmaceutical drugs in the USA represent even a bigger problem. An article in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) reported that an estimated 106,000 hospitalized patients die each year from drugs which, by medical standards, are properly prescribed and properly administered.
An article in Newsweek denotes that properly prescribed drugs are the fourth leading cause of death in the USA.
